River Thames FAQ’s

Where can I canoe

We provide canoe hire for the River Wye, all of it’s navigable length from Glasbury to Chepstow.

What boats do you have?

We have a range of sit-on-top kayaks, closed kayaks and open Canadian canoes. For further information see our equipment page.

Are children allowed?

Yes, but there is a minimum age of 5 years old and 25Kg in weight to be able to go on the river in good conditions this is both for canoeing and kayaking.

We can allow a maximum of two adults and one child in a boat but you will always need two able paddlers in one canoe.

What is the difference between a canoe and a kayak?

We have a comprehensive overview of the differences between a canoe and kayak on this page.

Is there a minimum number?

We accept bookings of two or more. This is because it can be dangerous to paddle alone!

How far can I paddle on the Thames in a day?

In the upper-middle Thames, we think that 2 miles per hour is an achievable pace in our canoes. Obviously some will be faster than others. We think that 10 miles is the maximum distance in a day for amateur paddlers. This also gives the chance to stop a few times and take in the scenery, take refreshments and get through the locks. Rushing on the river is never a great idea and can spoil your experience!

For London Kayaking, the speed varies significantly due to the tide and the time you choose to paddle. Our experienced instructors will advise you on this when you book.

What should I wear?

  • Suitable outdoor clothing depending on weather conditions.
  • Trainers or walking shoes that lace up.
  • All technical equipment is provided.

How much will it cost?

Prices include transport (this is often an extra with other companies!) as well as all lock fees.

  • Half day canoe hire: £35 per person.
  • Full day canoe hire: £45 per person.
