Abingdon to Henley

Abingdon to Henley

We provide canoe hire from Abingdon to Henley (a 3 day trip in a canoe or kayak), amongst many other routes on the River Thames. This is a great option for those more adventurous paddlers looking for more of a challenge!

Abingdon to Henley route description

Starting from Abingdon (just below Abingdon Bridge) this is a beautiful stretch of the river Thames towards Shillingford where the river is still relatively small. Once you have passed Wallingford and the Goring and Streatley, the river is noticeably wider, although no more faster flowing due to the the locks. Finally coming through Henley you will get the chance to see the famous regatta course before you disembark.

You can choose where you stay and there are many options but we would recommend:

Day 1: Approximately 11 miles to Wallingford (camping available).

Day 2: Approximately 13 miles to Mapledurham (camping available).

Day 3: Approximately 12 miles to Henley-on-Thames.

Canoe Hire from Abingdon to Henley

Distance: 36 miles.
Time: 3 days in a canoe or kayak.
Locks: 12.

Getting through the Locks

You can either paddle through the locks or get out and carry your boats around. We would suggest that you paddle through the locks when the lock keeper is on duty and portage if the lock is unmanned.

When you are carrying your boats be sure to lift carefully and try not to scrape the bottoms of the boats along the ground if you can help it!
